Today is my second day in the daycare working with the children. I love that they are no longer shy and that I have already got passed to where they feel comfortable with me. As soon as I walked in they started interacting with me and showing me their new toy that they received. They have a new play pen filled with colorful balls, which helped me practice their colors. For example, I would simply pick up a blue ball, have them repeat the color after me, then ask them if they can find a ball that matches the one I have saying, "Can you find another blue ball?". I work with three children that are almost 2 years old  and one out of the two isn't too verbal so if she didn't repeat after me she at least was able to match the ball that I was holding recognizing the matching color. I would also point to other objects with the same color for example if they were wearing a piece of clothing with that specific color.

A few activities that I did along with my CT, was having finger painting with the children practicing their fine motor skills. They painted different strokes on the paper, such as big circles and small circles. They also painted on their hand to make handprints and we practiced working with the color red for that activity. Student A which is my nonverbal child, I kept on repeating the word "more" whenever she wanted more paint. I was happy when I would say by the fourth or fifth time I heard her finally speak up and say "more". I'm glad that even though she doesn't always repeat after me she is still listening and eventually tries to use her words more. What also helps is that Student B is more vocal and so student A hears her say words and name her colors and that encourages Student A. They are 4 months apart. Overall, I am glad I am seeing a little bit of progress.

  1. Hello Jasmine,
I enjoyed reading about your day at the daycare. The children seem like they had a fun day playing with you and the colorful balls. You also got the toddlers to use different skills. I like how you asked the children questions like what color is this ball? The questions allowed the children to use their thinking skills. They also used their problem solving and thinking skills for recognition and matching. It was great to see that you are working with the children with their language. I find myself repeating the word "more" to encourage the children to ask for more. During breakfast, one of the boys would tap my leg and point to the food. I asked him did he want more he said yes. I repeated more several times, and he finally asked for more. I'm glad you are seeing progress with your non-verbal student.

  2. Hi Jasmine,
Its great to hear you are adjusting to the environment and with the children. Yes, children definitely learn from each other. I love to see children share ideas and help each other. These social skills are very helpful to their developmental level and it increases their sense positive behavior. Also, it leads to long life academic success. Glad you are making a difference in young lives, keep up the good work!
